Character
  1. Witch - The witches are actually quite ironic. Most people know " WITCH " as feminine; however, the " WITCH " in this story has both the masculine, and the feminine characteristics. They are described as if they are some aliens, but in reality they were living in Earth for a while. The witch later foresees Macbeth's future, they believe Macbeth will become a king.
  2. Macbeth - Macbeth is curious if he will become a king. At the end of this section, he is called the "thane of Cawdor,"
  3. Banquo - Banquo will become the father of the King.
  4. Ross - Ross tells Macbeth, he earned a title from the thanes.
  5. Angus - Angus is a messenger, he talks about the "THANES OF CAWDOR" is still alive, somewhere in the Earth, but he lost his title.

Summary
Most of the scenes of these first chapters contain the three witches. They are somehow one of the strangest characters in the scene so far. They have different characteristics of men and women. These witches are able to foresee the future. They tell Macbeth, he will become a king, and tells Banquo, he will become the father of a king. As the witches are gone, messenger Angus tells Macbeth earned a title, “ Thane of Cawdor.” The title was one of the best titles anyone could every get.

Conflict
The witches became the incentives for Macbeth’s ambition to become a King. Because Macbeth earns a popular, and one of the best titles, he believes the witches’ words


What do we learn about Lady Macbeth in these scenes?
Lady Macbeth is Macbeth’s wife, and she is quite loyal to Macbeth. However, seem seeks for power, she thing Macbeth’s title is still not enough. Lady Macbeth wants Macbeth as a King.

“Glamis thou art, and Cawdor; and shalt be What thou art promised. Yet do I fear thy nature … Hie thee hither, That I may pour my spirits in thine ear And chastise with the valor of my tongue All that impedes thee from the golden round, Which fate and metaphysical aid doth seem To have thee crowned withal.” (Lines 2~17)
How might Lady Macbeth answer the question “What is the meaning of life?” Explain your answer.
Lady Macbeth would say, the meaning of life would be power, and political status.

“The raven himself is hoarse That croaks the fatal entrance of Duncan Under my battlements. Come, you spirits That tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here, And fill me from the crown to the toe top-full Of direst cruelty.” (Lines 28~33)
Identify and write out two of Lady Macbeth’s lines that are particularly striking. Explain why you selected the lines.
“This have I thought good to deliver thee, my dearest partner of greatness, that thou might’st not lose the dues of rejoicing, by being ignorant of what greatness is promised thee. Lay it to thy heart, and farewell.”
“Come, you spirits That tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here, and fill me from the crown to the toe top-full Of direst cruelty. Make thick my blood. Stop up the access and passage to remorse.”
(Line 30-34) - Lady Macbeth is eager to become more powerful, it is very surprising that she tries so hard to get Macbeth to be the king.

Identify one significant word that Lady Macbeth uses in 1.5 or 1.6, and define both the denotation and connotation of the word. Explain why you think the word is significant.
Honor (1.6 - line 17)
Denotation: high respect, esteem (dictionary.com)
Connotation: Honor is a positive definition which could be described negatively when honor spoils someone, in most cases it is a very positive meaning.


ACT 1

Scene 7
Why has Macbeth decided to kill King Duncan at the end of ACT 1?
Basically macbeth decided to kill King Duncan because he sees a hope. He is convinced by Lady Macbeth that it is really possible to kill Duncan without risking. Lady Macbeth taunts Macbeth my calling him a coward. Then Lady Macbeth tells him that he should make Duncan drunk and kill him when Duncan is sleeping. Lady Macbeth tells every detail, how to assassinate Duncan.
After discussion
It seems like Lady Macbeth is representing the devil, and Macbeth is representing the Angel. Macbeth is ambivalent of whether to kill Duncan or not. However Lady Macbeth keeps taunting Macbeth and givers Macbeth the confidence. On the other hand, the angel part of Macbeth is unsure, whether this is a honorable action to do. Macbeth states that Duncan gave the title, and this part shows that Macbeth is symbolizing the angel.


ACT 2

Scene 2
How does Macbeth react to the killing of Duncan? Why does he react this way?
Macbeth feels regretful, he visions the dagger, and he is sort of hallucinated, he wants to overcome guilt with the hallucination. He was sort of scared that he killed the King. He is also scared of God, he said "AMEN", this shows that she is really scared of his own consequence.
How does Lady Macbeth react to the killing of Duncan? Why does she react this way?
Macbeth first regrets that she did not kill Macbeth, because she thought Macbeth was too scared to commit the murder. Her action reflects her cold blood.

ACT 3

Scene 5
The witches meet Hecate, the goddess of witches, scolds the three witches for getting involved in the business of Macbeth witout telling her. Hecate tells the sisters, they must confuse Macbeth, so he could have even more desire for power.
Scene 6
Banquo's murder is blamed on Fleance, but Lennox and another lord thinks Macbeth committed the murder. Lennox and other lord thinks Macduff and Malcom can save the Scotland from Macbeth my preparing a war.

ACT 4

Scene 7
What does Macbeth want in this scene?
Macbeeth is very confused because he sees Banquo at the row of the kings. He demands a answer, but the witches does nt answer him.
Macbeth still desires power.
What stands in his way?
The witches summons a ghost or an illusion which tells Macbeth, be aware of Macduff.
How does Macbeth attempt overcome the obstacles in his way?
Macbeth first sends murderer to Macduff's caslte, to kill Macduff's family (wife and children). Macbeth just wants to kill every obstacles in his way.
What do the witches want in this scene?
The witches probably want Macbeth to murder even more people, since witches enjoys murder.

Act 5 scene 8
(Lines 17~22)
Accursèd be that tongue that tells me so,
For it hath cowed my better part of man!
And be these juggling fiends no more believed,
That palter with us in a double sense,
That keep the word of promise to our ear,
And break it to our hope. I’ll not fight with thee.


Here Macbeth is scared of Macduff, because Macduff says he is born straight from his mother’s womb. Macduff thinks the Witches’ charm is nonsense. Macbeth’s belief toward the witches disappears, and Macbeth is scared of dying. This is a huge change because before he boasted and he thought he was invincible.


Act 5 scene 5
(Lines 17~28)

She should have died hereafter.
There would have been a time for such a word.
Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow,
Creeps in this petty pace from day to day
To the last syllable of recorded time,
And all our yesterdays have lighted fools
The way to dusty death. Out, out, brief candle!
Life’s but a walking shadow, a poor player
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage
And then is heard no more. It is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing.


Macbeth does not really care about Lady Macbeth’s death, but after her death, Macbeth’s actions are sort of unorganized and very chaotic. It seems like he lost one side of him.

What is the main idea of the story?
  • The main idea of the story is what seems to be good is not always good.
  • "Fair is foul, foul is fair"
  • This theme reappears very often, in such scenes such as when Macbeth and Lady Macbeth is planning to kill the King Duncan. Lady Macbeth and Macbeth is first, kind but they are planning a murder under their kindness.
